Suburbia filled her like a cancer.
It seeped into the smallest veins in her lungs & tore through her like a beast – mutilating her into a thing no one could recognize.
She had not come from here – she came from a place wild & free like the hair that once fell to her shoulders – hair that was tamed by beauty salons full of artificial smells & mildew. Her nails, once broken by the repetitive motion of climbing rocks & throwing sticks, were now coated in acrylic shell. Plastic that was attached to her carotene – sometimes infecting it, catching & trapping bacteria.
Sometimes there were days that she looked outside & remembered a place that felt every season, unlike the constructed environment that now surrounded her. She watched the families eagerly & greedily nest into the safety of their large homes. But beyond these places, on the outskirts, there thrived a monstrous reality – the throes of poverty. Suburbia was a kingdom that exiled the impoverished & hid them behind walls of dirt & cement.
